HURRICANE, UTAH & SURROUNDING SITES
Hurricane was established in 1905 after pioneers, spending eleven years building a canal to water the two thousand acres of fertile land, finished this historic task without modern tools and equipment. The fertile lands produce many fruits, vegetables, and nuts, and is known as Southern Utah's "Fruit Basket."

The City of Hurricane got its name from an 1865 incident in which a sudden gust of wind blew the top off Erastus Snow's buggy. He exclaimed, "My, that was a Hurricane!" The world famous Hurricane Fault was named as a result of this event, and later, when the town was organized, the unanimous decision was to name it "Hurricane." Although the city was named for a hurricane, no such storm has ever occurred here. Actually, the climate is very mild year-round.

Hurricane lies in line with traffic going to the national parks and Lake Powell. Average daily traffic on Hurricane's State Street has increased considerably over the last five years. Daily traffic is 11,000 visitors per day, or over 2.7 million visitors a year. "In the last six months Hurricane has had visitors from every state in the Union but one.

Hurricane Valley Heritage Park is really the nucleus of what to do and what to see in Hurricane, and from there you got out." The park is less parkish than monumental. Artifacts preserved on the grounds and in the museum pay tribute to the pioneer forebears of the valley and include a fascinating, centuries-old Indian crock.

Pah Tempe Mineral Springs soothe away stress, stiffness, and aches in naturally hot, mineral baths.

Quail Creek Reservoir, or Home of the Bass, on the western edge of the city is a great place to wet the underside of your boat. Jet ski, fish, boogie-board, or just lounge at the campground of picnic area.

Miles of Sand Dunes five minutes southwest of Hurricane harbor dune buggies, three and four wheelers, and particularly tickle the younger generation.

Three Falls is a little-known, but spectacular hike. After centuries of run-off roaring over the cliffs, three pools have collected and have loosened gorgeous rock slides throughout the falls area.
